                       Excalibur

Excalibur

Starring: Gabriel Byrne, Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart

 Directed by: John Boorman

 Rated PG

 Running Time: 144 minutes

Synopsis: The story of Arthur and his magical sword Excalibur

My Thoughts: This movie is very detailed in telling the story of King Arthur. It begins with his father Uther Pendragon being given the sword of Excalibur by Merlin, and proclaiming himself king. Uther, now king, begins to lust after his former enemies wife Igrayne, and this is were Arthur was born.

This story is very detailed and goes through a lot of story, but surprisingly isn't all that long of a movie. I really enjoyed the whole story of Arthur from beginning to end. The actress that played Morgana (her name escapes me.) was absolutely brilliant. Liam Neeson as Gawain was very well done, and Gabriel Byrne as Uther was very good too. This movie isn't all that well known because it has older actors as stars, most of whom no one has ever heard of. Ranking in about $35 million in the box office in 1981 was pretty impressive.

 Scorecard:

Acting: While most of the actors are unknown, the acting was fantastic. I am not sure that you could have come up with a better cast here. (1)

Story: The often dull story of King Arthur was told in a different view in this movie, starting at his conception and ending with his death, it was very well written and executed even better. (1)

Direction: The direction of this movie was perfect. I can't imagine any other feasible way of doing this movie. (1)

Expectations: The first time I saw this movie, I was in high school. I had no expectations what-so-ever for this movie. There were actors I had never heard of, and a story that had been overdone too many times. I was very surprised by the turnout. (1)

Boring?: While I really enjoy this movie, most people would find parts very dull and often boring. I am inclined to agree in some parts of the movie were a little slow. Which is a real shame. (1/2)

 FINAL SCORE: 4 1/2 OUT OF 5

Final Thoughts: This movie was very surprising and very well done. The best story of King Arthur I have ever seen put on film. Kudos go out to the stars and filmmakers here.
