GoldenEye
Starring: Pierce Brosnan Directed by: Martin Campbell Rated PG-13 Genre: Action Original Release Year: 1995 Synopsis: When a strong Electromagnetic satellite weapon codenamed GoldenEye is made in the former Soviet Union, James Bond is sent out to make sure that it is not used to destroy the world. My Thoughts: After a six year hiatus the Bond franchise is back. This was an original screenplay not written by Ian Flemming (The Mind Behind Bond) and this marks the first of many films by Pierce Brosnan, but sadly, this was his best. Scorecard Acting- Pierce Brosnan takes over the reigns of James Bond, and fits perfectly into the role. I was very impressed with the way he just seemed to click into the role and does an awesome job, but personally the one that I think carried this movie had to be Sean Bean who played Alec Trevelyn, the former 006. A Bond movie is only as good as the villain can make it, and in this case, Sean Bean made it incredibly good. (1) Direction- Martin Campbell does an incredible job with what he was given. I was very impressed with the way the story flowed, the great acting jobs he got from his actors, and the way the whole movie seemed to run on all cylinders. Campbell would go onto direct the new Casino Royale movie. (1) Story- I really enjoyed this story. I loved the idea of a former Double 0 agent becoming a bad guy, and I wish that the franchise would do more of that, it worked nicely. Sadly, this story did have a few flaws that really hurt. There were some continuity issues and a few scenes that seemed a little overdone, but overall the entire story was pretty impressive. (1/2) Expectations- I was not expecting much from this film, I was a kid when I saw it for the first time and was thoroughly impressed with the outcome of the movie, even then as a kid I was shocked at the quality of everything in this film. (1) Boring?- This film suffered from the "overdone syndrome" which seems to hurt a lot of films, Bond films especially. There is a fine line of a lot of cool action sequences and ridiculousness, and this bordered at times on the latter side of things, but it was not at all too incredibly terrible to really hurt the rating and make it a zero. (1/2) Final Score: 4 out of 5 Final Thoughts: This film will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first James Bond movie I had ever seen, and since then I have been a fan of the franchise. I am glad it was this film and not some later on, because if it had been, I may not have become a fan. This is one movie that everyone should see, just for the fact that it is a cool action movie, Bond aside, it was full of fun and had a pretty good story, and very good acting from everyone involved. While it is not the greatest Bond film, it ranks up there in the top 5.
