License to Kill

 Starring: Timothy Dalton

 Directed by: John Glen

 Rated PG-13

 Genre: Action

 Original Release Year: 1989

Synopsis: After close confidant Felix Leiter's wife is killed and Leiter is mamed, James Bond sets out to find the druglord that did it.

My Thoughts: James Bond set out on revenge? What the hell is that about? This is the first film in the franchise to garner a PG-13 rating for lots of violence, and lots of foul language, both of which really weren't needed.

   Scorecard

Acting- Timothy Dalton returns after his disastrous first outing as James Bond and finally picks up some slack. Dalton turns Bond into a dramatic character, which helps some but Dalton still seems to be lacking the excitement of playing James Bond. (1/2)

Direction- This is the final James Bond film directed by John Glen and he goes out with a BANG ...literally. There was a lot of excess violence that really was not necessary, and that actually took away from the Bond feel of the movie. But still, Glen does a good job with the story he was given and gets his actors to pull some of their own weight. (1/2)

Story- This story is a little odd. You will either really enjoy it, or really hate it. I am on the latter side of things. I did not enjoy the fact that James Bond was out for revenge, it just didn't seem right. I did like the back story of this film and it played out well on the screen, but it just wasn't Bond. (1/2)

Expectations- After The Living Daylights  I was expecting this movie to fail miserably, I am very glad it didn't. This film surpassed all expectations I had for it. (1)

Boring?- This movie was not at all boring, but it was a little over the top. Lots of gratuitous violence and silly action scenes took away from the feel of the movie, but was still entertaining, even with a long running time of 135 minutes or so. (1/2)

Final Score: 3 out of 5

Final Thoughts: Timothy Dalton stepped up as Bond and he wouldn't return. It's a sad thing, because if given more time, he could have been a decent Bond, but as it turns out, he is cemented in history as a terrible Bond. This film had to be cut down a lot, because the original rating was R, there was a lot of unneeded violence and some strong language that would offend a sailor, but still a pretty good movie, and one for a Bond fan, but if you aren't a fan of the franchise, you may want to watch something else.
