Never Say Never Again
Starring: Sean Connery Directed by: Irvin Kershner Rated PG Genre: Action Theatrical Release Year: 1983 Synopsis: Nuclear warheads are stolen and it is up to an aging James Bond to find them. My Thoughts: This film was NOT an official James Bond movie, as it was not made by the EON production company and was not owned by MGM, this movie is also a basic remake of the earlier Thunderball Bond film with some variations. This film was due out the same time as Octopussy which was Roger Moore's James Bond film. Scorecard Acting- Sean Connery returns to the silver screen as James Bond in this unofficial James Bond film. He is a lot older in this film than he was in the previous Bond films, and that really takes away the effect of the James Bond character. I was not that impressed with the way Connery portrayed Bond in this film, he just seemed bored with the character. (0) Direction- Irvin Kershner had a famous movie already under his belt with The Empire Strikes Back, so he decided to try his hand at a Bond film and fails miserably. The story had no flow to it, his actors did not give a good performance and there was nothing really great about the direction of the film either. (0) Story- This was the same exact story as Thunderball, with an 80's twist, there were video games in it. That's it. It was not an original idea for Bond, it was basically a rewrite of an older movie that also failed. (0) Expectations- I had lots of expectations for this film because I was hoping that Connery could do a better job here than Moore did in Octopussy that came out the same year. I was wrong. This movie fell well short of all expectations I had for it. (0) Boring?- This is the ONLY saving grace for this film. At 135 minutes or so, there was a lot of action and good story telling (even if the story was bad). I was intrigued by the movie even if everything else was bad, it kept me watching, and that says something. (1) Final Score: 1 out of 5 Final Thoughts: Remakes are rarely as good as the original, luckily the original was bad, this movie scored almost as good as the original, which is kind of sad. I was not impressed with the way this movie turned out, and was not satisfied with anything from this movie, but if you are a Bond fan and have not seen this movie I actually urge you to check it out, just for the fact that it was an unofficial Bond movie, and it was some 12 years after Connery hung up the Bond hat. If you have seen it and are thinking about seeing it again, I tell you to avoid it, or if you are not a Bond fan, don't bother with this film, trust me, it is for the best.
