On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Starring: George
Lazenby
Directed by: Peter R.
Hunt
Rated PG
Genre: Action
Original Release Year:
1969
Synopsis: James Bond
is MIA and everyone soon finds out why, he has met a lady, and all hell
soon breaks loose.
My Thoughts: A Bond
that isn't Sean Connery? How is that supposed to work? Lazneby does a
pretty good job in filling the role. Lets see how this movie stacks up.
Scorecard
Acting-
Australian George Lazenby gets his first role, and it just happens to be
the greatest role in cinematic history, James Bond. Lazenby does a very
good job in the character of Bond, and I was very impressed with the way
all his acting turned out, but the person that steals the show was Dianna
Rigg, who plays the Countess. She does an amazing job in the character
that she was given, and she plays off of Lazenby very well, the two
together meshed very well and really helped the movie. (1)
Direction-
Peter Hunt was a former film editor, not a director. It shows. This movie
didn't have the flow it should have. While he did get great performances
out of his actors, Hunt seemed to have problems with keeping the story
going, and it hurt the quality of the movie. (1/2)
Story-
People either really liked this story or really really hated it. James
Bond falls in love with a lady, and ends up marrying her. Is that what
James Bond is about? Lots of people say "NO", but to be honest I
really had a problem with it the first time I saw this movie. Who expected
James Bond to settle down and get married? But after watching this movie a
few more times, the idea really didn't bother me as much, and it really
grew on me, the way everything turned out made for a really good story. (1)
Expectations-
I wasn't expecting anything from this movie. A new Bond, a director that
hadn't directed before, two bad movies in a row before this one. This
movie was a pleasant surprise because it turned out to be very watchable
and very entertaining. (1)
Boring?- Sadly, this movie suffers form extreme boredom.
You see Bond movies for lots of action and lots of gadgets, while this
movie had some action (some really cool scenes of action!) it suffers from
the "chick-t-fying" effect because it was turned into a love
story, and it seemed really slow. This movie had a running time of almost
140 minutes, and you feel all 140 minutes. (0)
Final Score:
3 1/2 out of 5
Final Thoughts: Some
Bond fans say this is the best Bond movie, others say this is the worst.
In my opinion, I think that it is one of the better ones, but certainly
not THE best. This is another one of the Bond movies, that you really
don't need to be a James Bond fan to watch this movie, in fact, most
ladies would really enjoy this movie just because the fact that there are
some sad parts and some sappy parts, I recommend this movie, but be
forewarned it isn't a conventional James Bond film.
