Open Water

Starring: Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis

 Directed by: Chris Kentis

 Rated R

Genre: Suspense (or so it is classified that way, I really don't see how it is a suspense.)

Synopsis: Susan and Daniel go on a scuba diving vacation to get away from their high stress jobs. They separate from the rest of the group of other divers and are left behind when the boat leaves. They soon realize they are left to fend for themselves in shark infested waters, and then they soon figure out that they are most likely going to die out there.

My Thoughts: This is based on the true story about a couple from America that were left behind by a scuba team in Australia. To be honest, it wasn't really a story that HAD to be told. And it sort of bastardized the whole story of the two unfortunate souls that this really happened to.

   Scorecard:

Acting- Two no name actors (which is way it should have been) star in this film, and they did a decent enough job for what they had to work with. The way this movie was written it was imperative that these two actors worked well together and they did. But the acting wasn't all that great, considering the majority of this movie was these two just floating in the water, what can you really expect? (1/2)

Direction- I did not like the direction of this movie. Sure, it was based on actual events, but still, the movie had no real flow to it. All this film was was two people floating in the open ocean, and that is it... it is kind of hard to screw that up, but for some odd reason, this director found a way. (0)

Story- If I was the family of the two people this actually happened to, I would be mad as hell for the way things were portrayed. These two people went scuba diving and were left behind by the boat by mistake, that is a travesty in its own right. The way these characters were written, there was no real sympathy for them, they didn't do a good job humanizing them, sure it is still a tragedy that should not have happened, but it did, what is the point of making a bad movie about them? (0)

Expectations- This movie was hyped to be the greatest ocean movie since Jaws. It wasn't. Not even close. And I wasn't even a big fan of Jaws. (0)

Boring?- This story is about two people floating in the middle of the ocean. Do you really expect it to be action packed? The sad thing is, this movie only carries a 79 minute running time, and for 70 of those minutes it is more boring than watching paint dry on grass while it grows. (0)

Final Score: 1/2 out of 5

Final Thoughts: This movie was just plain bad. I really do not understand why people love this movie so much. Sure, it is based on true events, and those events were very tragic, but what is the point of this movie, it was boring and didn't even tell a good story. This movie was shot on a budget of something like 150k and then the movie makers went and sold it for something like 2.5 million or something, I think Lions Gate really wasted their money there. But then again, this movie did make some in the box office, and I still do not understand why.  Avoid this movie like you would avoid a drunken redneck wearing a white hood.
