Planet of the Apes (2001)
Starring: Mark Wahlberg Directed by: Tim Burton Rated PG-13 Genre: Science Fiction Theatrical Release Year: 2001 Synopsis: An astronaut finds himself on a strange planet ruled by apes. My Thoughts: This movie is not a direct remake of the 1960's version of the same name, this is more of a "reinvent" of the movie, and it was done by Tim Burton, whom I am not a fan of. Scorecard Acting- Mark Wahlberg plays Leo Davidson an astronaut that has been sucked into a time warp and crash lands on a strange planet in the year 5021. Wahlberg does a pretty good job with the character that was given to him, but personally, I think that the whole movie was stolen by the acting of Timothy Roth who played the ruthless General Thade. The overall acting in this film was done very well, and everyone seemed to mesh well with everyone else. (1) Direction- I make it no secret that I am not a big fan of Tim Burton, I believe that there is only one film of his that I have really enjoyed and that was Big Fish, Tim Burton has a bad habit of turning pretty good stories into a crapfest, this movie is no different. Burton wanted to "re-imagine" the franchise, but after his atrocious directing job he did in this movie, the whole franchised stopped with this single movie. He does get props for getting good acting out of his actors, but this movie had no flow, and the story was hard to follow at times, I cannot give him a half star for the acting, because personally, I don't think he had anything to do with the good acting. (0) Story- One of the greatest cinematic stories ever written for the screen, all messed up. It had the general premise of the original story, with an astronaut landing on a distant planet ruled by apes, and it had the same general idea of an ending, with an ironic twist at the end (which personally I believe was almost as good as the original end.) But the story had little flow to it, and it seemed to be rushed, and that really hurt the quality of the film. (1/2) Expectations- I knew exactly what to expect from this film thanks to my good buddy Jim giving me the heads up before I ventured into seeing this film. While it wasn't quite as good as advertised, it was still a pretty watchable movie. (1/2) Boring?- This movie suffered from what I like to call "The Overdone Syndrome" as every other scene in this film had to be completely overdone. Lots of over the top action sequences, and some over the top acting from minor characters (I am looking at you Michael Clarke Duncan) and some really slow parts hurt the flow of the movie. With a running time just under 2 hours, you get about what you expect, some really dull parts, but some fun parts too. (1/2) Final Score: 2 1/2 out of 5 Final Thoughts: I honestly believe that if another director had taken over the reigns of this film, it would have been better than it was. This film had some moments that were just as good, if not a little better than the original, but it just does not live up to the original movie, even if it was supposed to be a "reinvent". I recommend this movie ONLY if you like Science Fiction movies, and you have a couple of hours to kill. Be warned though, you may get mad at some parts. Way to go Burton.
