The Departed
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio
Directed by: Martin Scorsese
Rated R
Genre: Drama
Theatrical Release Year: 2006
Synopsis: The mafia in Boston
somehow gets one of their own inside the Boston police department, but the
tables have turned because the PD also sends one of their own into the
mafia.
My Thoughts: While this is
not the greatest Scoresese movie ever made, this is the one he actually
won the academy award for.
Scorecard
Acting-
With an all-star cast like this movie has, there is nothing that can go
wrong. Leonardo DiCaprio plays a rogue policeman that infiltrates the mob
and does one of the greatest acting jobs of his career. Matt Damon plays a
good friend of a mob boss that happens to be working for the police, and
Damon gives one of his greatest performances of his career. Jack Nicholson
does what Jack does, and while he did not give a phenomenal performance,
he did what he was supposed to do. The whole cast as a whole did an
amazing job. (1)
Direction-
Martin Scorsese finally gets his after being shafted a few times. There
was perfect direction in this movie and nothing seemed to go wrong.
Everything went right for this movie. (1)
Story-
A mob guy gets into the police and a police officer gets into the mob, and
craziness begins to happen. This story was well written and was executed
even better. While this was not an original screenplay, it was a remake of
a Hong Kong movie, you cannot take away from the fact that it was
flawless. (1)
Expectations- I
had nothing but high expectations for this movie. With such an all star
cast, and a great director, you expect nothing but greatness, and that is
exactly what you get, but nothing more. (1/2)
Boring?-
With a running time of 150 minutes or so, there is bound to be some really
slow parts, and there were. While there weren't a ton of slow spots, there
were quite a few slow spots right in the middle of the movie where you
don't want the story to slow down any. (1/2)
Final Score:
4 out of 5
Final Thoughts: This movie
has greatness written all over it. There is a lot of violence and a lot of
swearing, so it is not for everyone, but if you do not mind a little blood
or tons of 'F' bombs, this movie is for you. This movie was incredibly
easy to watch and was very enjoyable, if you have yet to check this movie
out, I highly suggest that you do.
