Carrey

Peter Weir

1998

My Thoughts: I
am not a big Jim Carrey fan. Plain and simple. But this movie was
different, I was very impressed with the way everything went and this
movie just had an overall great feel to it.
Scorecard
Acting-
Jim Carrey stars as Truman Burbank a focus of a television show that he
knows nothing about. The creator of the television show is played by Ed
Harris, both Carrey and Harris both do excellent jobs in their characters
and I cannot find anything to complain about the acting from anyone in
this film. (1)
Direction-
Peter Weir has done some big name movies (master and commander, witness
just to name a couple) but this is the film that I believe he did some of
his greatest directing. Everything just went right with this film, the
actors gave solid performances, the story flowed very nicely, the film was
directed to where everyone wanted to see it go, just a great job from
Weir. (1)
Story-
I loved the premise of this movie. An orphan is adopted by a television
studio and is raised on television for his whole life, and never knows any
other world but the one he is living in, then suddenly he begins to
question what is going on, and he soon figures out that everything in his
world revolves around him. Great story. (1)
Expectations-
Like I said earlier, I am not a huge fan of Jim Carrey, so I really didn't
have all that high of expectations for this film, when I finally did see
it I was very surprised at the depth of the movie and the acting ability
that Carrey actually has deep down inside of him. (1)
Boring?-
This is the one that is the killer for the perfect score. While there were
not tons of boring parts to it, there were parts that were getting repetitive
and it hurt the quality of the film. It was not incredibly bad, but it was
noticeable enough to hurt the rating. (1/2)
Final
Score: 4 1/2
out of 5
Final Thoughts:
This movie was a sleeper. I loved everything about this movie, and even if
you aren't a Jim Carrey fan like me, you would most likely love this movie
too. It tells a great story, has some laughs, and have some sad parts too.
If you have not seen this movie, I whole heartedly suggest you go to your
local video store and rent it, or better yet, click on the amazon link
above and buy it, it is worth it, you wont regret it.
