Young Frankenstein

Starring: Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle

 Directed by: Mel Brooks

 Rated PG

 Genre: Comedy

Synopsis: Dr. Frankenstein (Fronkonsteen) a notable lecturer is informed that he has just inherited his family estate. So he travels to Transylvania and becomes wrapped up in his grandfathers work of bringing the dead back to life.

My Thoughts: There is a perfect reason why I made this my number 1 comedy on my list of top 25 comedies. Here is why...

   Scorecard:

Acting- Gene Wilder plays Doctor Baron Frederick von Frankenstein, a mild mannered lecturer, but whenever someone mentions his family heritage he goes mad, Wilder plays this part perfectly, I never really looked at Gene Wilder as a great actor per se, but did an awesome job here. Peter Boyle plays the Monster, and does a good enough job to get recognized. Teri Garr plays Inga the ditsy assistant. The great Madeline Kahn plays the stuck up and sometimes annoying Elizabeth. But it is Marty Feldman as Igor that really steals the show ( remember it is I gor ) for some odd reason, that character ( the comedy relief ) really helped this movie flow. (1)

Direction-  Mel Brooks at his finest. This movie had the same plot ideas as any Frankenstein movie, it just so happened that this movie was turned into a comedy. The direction of this movie in my opinion was flawless. (1)

Story- The story of Frankenstein is a classic one on its own, but let Mel Brooks attack it, and you get something so much more. Every time I see this movie, it still makes me laugh, there are so many quotable lines in this movie, and all the subtlety of the comedy is what makes this movie gold. (1)

Expectations- This movie surpassed any expectations I had for it. This was the first Mel Brooks movie I ever saw, and I really wasn't expecting anything because when I was younger, spoofs just weren't all that great, this is the movie that changed my mind. (1)

Boring?- This is the only flaw to this movie. If it hadn't followed the story of Frankenstein so much, I don't think that it would have been as boring, the story of Frankenstein is dull a lot of the times, but thanks to Mel Brooks, the slowness was cut down to only a few scenes. (1/2)

   Final Score: 4 1/2 out of 5

Final Thoughts: This movie still holds up today 30 something years after it was made. Mel Brooks really has a knack for that. If you have never seen this movie, I urge you to see any version of Frankenstein first, then watch this, you will enjoy it a lot more. Also, when you watch this movie, look for the small things, some of the funniest things in this movie are small things, like candles not being lit, or eyes being crossed or of course... Frau Blucher!!!
