You Only Live Twice
Starring: Sean Connery Directed by: Lewis Gilbert Rated PG Genre: Action Original Release Year: 1967 Synopsis: Two space capsules (one American and the other Soviet) are captured in space, with each country thinking it was the other responsible for the capturing, World War 3 is on the brink of sparking. James Bond is sent out to see who is really responsible for the capturing of the space vessels. My Thoughts: After the disaster of Thunderball , this film couldn't possibly be much worse...or could it? Scorecard Acting- Sean Connery again does not seem too happy about his role again as James Bond. Connery does not seem to be "in it" and it really shows, and sadly not even Sean Connery's half-assed acting gets this movie over at all. (0) Direction- This is the first Bond film by Lewis Gilbert, and does a good job in directing. Sadly his main actor doesn't give a great performance, so it really took away from the direction of the film to. The movie flowed good enough to keep you into it, great sequences of action and some really cool cinematography. But sadly, I cannot give it a one star, just for the fact that Connery didn't give a good performance, and that is part of the directors job, in getting his actors to turn in a great performance. (1/2) Story- This film was the first Bond movie not to take place in America or Britain. This movie took place almost solely in Japan. James Bond fakes his death to have more leeway in getting to the bottom of who really is responsible for capturing two space vessels in space. I liked the idea of Bond's fake death, but all the Japanese culture stuff was basically shoved down our throats, and it hurt the flow of the story. (1/2) Expectations- I really did not have ANY expectations for this film because it followed a really bad Bond movie. This film met the expectations I had for it, I was expecting it to be about on par with Thunderball, and it was. (1/2) Boring?- There were too many slow spots in this film. In the middle of the movie, they had a Japanese wedding that lasted a good 5 minutes, and that REALLY hurt the flow of the movie, and James Bond learning "ninja fighting skills" was in my opinion a little ridiculous. (0) Final Score: 1 1/2 out of 5 Final Thoughts: This is another one of those movies that is just for Bond fans. But the problem is that even some Bond fans had problems watching this film. It was a decent film, but really shouldn't have been a Bond action packed movie with cool spy stuff, that's not what this movie was about, and it hurt it a lot.
