My Thoughts:
I was incredibly impressed with what I got out of this movie.
Scorecard
Acting-
Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a cartoonist for the San Francisco Chronicle that
seems to have solved the case of the Zodiac Killer. Gyllenhaal does an
amazing job in his character, and this is easily his greatest performance
I have seen him in. Robert Downey Jr. plays a reporter from the same paper
and also gives an incredible performance. I think that the stand out
performance was Mark Ruffalo who played the SFPD officer that was obsessed
with catching the zodiac, the overall cast performance was basically
phenomenal. (1)
Direction-
What would you expect from the director that also gave you Fight Club and
Se7en and Panic Room? There was nothing but great direction from this
film, everything flowed very nicely, and Fincher got great performances
out of his actors, great job all around. (1)
Story-
This story is actually based on the book by Robert Graysmith (who is
played by Jake Gyllenhaal in this film) and was incredibly done. The
Zodiac Killer is terrorizing California from San Francisco all the way
down to Riverside. The story was nicely written and was executed
flawlessly. Great job from the screenwriter James Vanderbilt for adapting
a good story into a great movie. (1)
Expectations-
I really was not expecting a whole lot from this movie. I was worried with
the casting choices made in this film, I am not a huge fan of Jake
Gyllenhaal, but after this performance, he has me believing that he can
carry a movie on his own. I was very impressed with the outcome, and it
far surpassed with what I was expecting it to be. (1)
Boring?- When you have a running time of almost three hours
(160 minutes or so) there is going to be a lot of slow spots. This movie
had some parts that they seemed to drag on, and it hurt the quality of the
movie, to be honest if they would have cut about 20 minutes out of this
movie, I think that it easily could have been a better movie. But the
spots that dragged really hurt the outcome of the movie. (0)
Final
Score: 4
out of 5
Final Thoughts:
This is the best movie of 2007 already. Of course it only came out in
March, and there are still a lot of movies to come out, but this is the
best I have seen so far this year. This film was slow, and built a lot,
but was very worthy of your money. I whole heartedly suggest you go and
see this movie if you have the chance, especially if you have lived
through the whole Zodiac thing in the 60's-70's.
